HC Robbins Landon dubbed these symphonies ‘elegant’ and ‘tragic’ respectively; Podger’s reading of them injects a little more vigour into the former, and an uplifting nobility into the latter. Not to be missed - I’ll definitely be keeping an ear out for further forays like this from Podger.

In the two symphonies here, nos 43 and 49, gusto rises naturally from the notes and Podger’s flair for leading ensembles from her violin. Nothing is wilfully exaggerated...This is Haydn as he is meant to be played: delighting in the composer’s invention, forgoing the heavy hand.
