About

Over the last 15 years, Jordi Savall has been exploring the links between Western and Eastern repertoires because he regards this work as a way to develop a better mutual understanding. In this new album, Hespèrion XXI plays alongside the ensemble Orpheus 21, created by him in the wake of the recent migrant crisis to welcome mu sicians from countries stricken by war, hunger or disasters to draw attention to the dignity shared of all humankind. The idea - prevailing during the Middle Ages - of a light coming from the East («ex Oriente Lux») is actualized in this album with the fr uitful encounter of repertoires from Syria, Bangladesh, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Greece, Lebanon, Ira q , Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey.

Medieval music from Europe and traditional songs from the Far and Middle East not only meet on this marvellous double CD, they develop a dialogue and thus bridge the gap between written record and oral tradition. With this live recording, Jordi Savall and the ensembles Orpheus 21 and Hespèrion XXI work wonders by creating a unique and touching programme for a great variety of instruments.
