About
After the phenomenal critical success of the first two volumes of the complete Sibelius symphonies (Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Diapason d’Or, FFFF Télérama etc. ), the Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra introduce us to the ‘green’ side of Sibelius who, suffering from health problems and financial worries, moved to the shores of Lake Tuusula just before writing his Third Symphony. His output was powerfully inspired by nature. In April 1915, when the world was in chaos, he wrote in his diary of the appearance of sixteen swans over the lake and noted down their cry, which inspired the great horn theme of the Fifth Symphony’s finale

Christmas 2022
This latest recording of Sibelius’s Third gets off to a vital start, with marvellously gutsy playing from the Gothenburg strings...Yet the most exciting performance is of the Kalevala-based tone-poem Pohjola’s Daughter – a piece that can easily fall into a series of picturesque episodes but here, from its brooding opening to its visceral climax, delivered in a single sweep.
Mar/Apr 2023
[3rd Symphony] The second movement is beautifully if more conventionally done, showing care over inner detail and a continuing sense of enthusiasm. Through personal phrase-shaping the finale sounds more varied and capricious than I’ve ever heard it. [5th Symphony] Rouvali is totally comfortable in the tricky finale, setting a quick pace but controlling every shifting tempo as if spontaneously...an outstanding addition to the overflowing Sibelius catalog.
December 2022
The orchestral playing is splendidly articulate and expressive throughout, with excellent attention to dynamics and colour.
