About

“The Beethoven concerto is a piece of overwhelming power,” says violinist Vilde Frang. “It is somehow more than music – the dimension of it feels almost cosmic. The force of this concerto takes me by surprise, over and over again.” Frang juxtaposes Beethoven’s epic, lyrical work with Stravinsky’s compact violin concerto, which pays spiky tribute to 18th century models. The conductor is Pekka Kuusisto, himself an adventurous violinist, in his role as Artistic Best Friend of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. “It was the chamber musical qualities of the Beethoven concerto that provided the key for me,” says Frang. “The violin is constantly ‘feeding’ and playing around the orchestra … In its own way, the Stravinsky too engages the soloist in a constant dialogue with the orchestra. With Pekka Kuusisto and the Bremen players, I really feel in such a comfort zone … There is a feeling of having everything to gain by gathering together, coming together.”

Christmas 2022

Frang’s exquisite tonal subtlety and enhanced range of dynamics allows her to weave in and out of Beethoven’s carefully graded orchestral textures, with a profound sense of listening and responding to everything that is going on around her...If anything, the Stravinsky is finer still.

November 2022

Frang is a fascinating and original player whose fund of interpretative ideas is always a pleasure to encounter, and this coupling is no exception.

20th October 2022

In both works, her playing is constantly alive to the music’s swirling undercurrents of electric energy...Not a note, whether from Frang or the excellent players of the Kammerphilharmonie, is routine – the level of attention to detail is hugely rewarding.

International Classical Music Awards 2023

Vilde Frang and Pekka Kuusisto's new recording combines the best values of traditional interpretation and contemporary musicianship...The declamatory style narrates both Beethoven's late-classical sonic monument and Stravinsky's neoclassical structures with fascinating freshness. One of the highest achievements of modern style in violin playing and conducting.
