Sean Shibe’s second PENTATONE album Lost & Found is an ecstatic journey containing music by outsiders, mystics, visionaries, who often have more than one identity and lay claim to various artistic traditions, genres, or audiences. The repertoire ranges from Hildegard von Bingen to Olivier Messiaen, Moondog, Julius Eastman, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Meredith Monk, Shiva Feshareki, Oliver Leith and Daniel Kidane. Stretching ten centuries, these pieces are bound together by Shibe’s unique electric guitar sound and aesthetic.

The first print run of this album comes with an exclusive polaroid picture of Sean at the recording sessions.

Multi-award-winning guitarist Sean Shibe brings a fresh and innovative approach to the traditional classical guitar, while also exploring contemporary music and repertoire for electric guitar. Despite the surface eclecticism, Shibe’s unique approach to the electric guitar – one based as much on exploring atemporal textures as on finding the vox humana, rather than the diabolus, in musica – binds together these pieces.

There is an art to putting together an effective programme that not every musician has mastered and many would be better off sticking to more traditional formulas. When a musician gets the formula right, as Shibe does on this new recital disc, the results transcend the individual pieces included to create almost a new work. In this instance, they add up to a vision which is Shibe’s.

Featuring music by composers including Hildegard von Bingen, Chick Corea and Meredith Monk, Shibe's self-described 'emporium of curiosities' may look like an odd assortment on paper, but in practice it all hangs together beautifully: as on his rather more orthodox Camino last summer, the Scottish guitarist displays an astonishing capacity for finding beauty in stillness, with the sequence of three works by Moondog the gently beating heart of the programme.

Here’s another bonkers-at-first-glance, brilliantly curated album from the guitarist Sean Shibe...A lot of the music is meditative. Some of it skirts perilously close to chill-out, or would do if Shibe let it: instead, whenever we might be lulled into inactive listening Shibe provides something subversive...You won’t know what’s hit you.
