From a pinging, harp-like upper register to lightly buzzing low notes, it has clarity and a gentle, dusky tone that Alain Planès exploits to the full.

It’s certainly a superb-sounding instrument, with a wonderful balance between the registers, without any hint of hollowness in the treble, and no overpowering snarl from the bass.
