Both sonatas recorded here are the work of the young Brahmsstill a teenager when he wrote Op 2and perfectly complement the much later rhapsodies. These are magisterial accounts from a pianist noted for his mastery of the Romantics.

Ohlsson is, if not the man for the job, then certainly one of them. He has power and agility in reserve, which means that he can take fences in his stride that find others huffing and blowing...Not for a moment did I feel I was in anything but the safest of Brahmsian hands.
