About

After Ensemble Diderot rediscovered the trio sonatas by Mondonville and Meister and chamber music from Dresden, Berlin, London and Paris, the adven- ture seekers around South Tyrolean violinist Johannes Pramsohler are devoting themselves yet to another neglected genre: sonatas for three violins. Through the concentration of three instruments in the soprano range, these fabulous and unique pieces that they have brought together from collections all over Europe represent an exciting range of electrifying sonorities. Three violins competing in the quest to win the audience’s favour – just like the beauty contest of the three goddesses in the myth of the Judgment of Paris, a popular subject for the artists of the Baroque. Compositional top pieces that amaze with dramatic artifices. “[this is] music that would shine through even in merely adequate performanc- es, but Ensemble Diderot’s one-to-a-part readings on original instruments are truly superb.”- BBC Music Magazine “Pramsohler, violinist and founder of Ensemble Diderot, has given careful thought to the construction and originality of his programmes...” BBC Music Magazine “Ensemble Diderot respond with infectious aplomb...No affected gestures and frilly cuffs here, only the dramatic moment grabbed with both hands.” -Gramo- phone Magazine

Ensemble Diderot’s invigorating approach has considerable appeal...Among the musical highlights is a sonata by Austrian Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. Best known for his string writing, his music is generously seasoned with local colour from the folk traditions of central and eastern Europe.

Much as I’ve admired and enjoyed every single disc Johannes Pramsohler and his Ensemble Diderot have served up, this one might just be my favourite...Hurrah and bravo.
