This recording assembles three recent concertos from the GrawemeyerAward-winning composer performed by distinguished Nordic soloists, beginning with a second piano concerto played by its dedicatee and inspiration, Leif Ove Andsnes. Sørensensclarinet concerto for Martin Fröstis inspired by the scents of Spanish poetry, while his trumpet concerto for Tine Thing Helsethfeeds of his constant obsession with the beauty and vulnerability of Venice. Each is highly evocative and filled with Sørensens own etched beauty.

Leif Ove Andsnes and Martin Fröst are two of the finest exponents of their instruments in the world. To that list I would add the rising star, Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth. All three relish every challenge the composer gives them, and make music out of those challenges. Sørensen’s landscapes may take a few hearings to feel at home in, but it is worth the trouble.

In each case the soloist is the light source and the orchestra the echoing space, which makes these concertos tough to get inside for the accompanying orchestras...From each of the big-name soloists, the dramaturgy is subtle but as clear as day...Probably not a contender for ‘the one Bent Sørensen disc you must own’, but a must for fans.

Three recent concertos by Bent Sørensen, which are full of attractive, vivid instrumental effects, are brought together by Dacapo Records, all with their dedicatees as the soloists...It may be fundamentally undemanding music, but it is beautifully made.
