About

When, on 26th August 2013 in the KKL Concert Hall, Claudio Abbado conducted a performance of Bruckners Ninth with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, there was present in the room an inescapable sense of an ending. To this day, those present recall the conductors gesture of gratitude and thanks at the final ovation: Abbado placed his right hand on his heart with that gently self-effacing yet friendly look which was so characteristic of this man who was a star conductor yet who was devoid of any lordly airs. The premonition that this could turn out to be the last concert of Abbados could be felt in the atmosphere. And what a concert experience it was, this last concert and therefore also the last concert recording of Claudio Abbado!

1891 'Vienna' version of Symphony No. 1.

December 2019

The Ninth was Bruckner’s farewell to the world, and Abbado’s. This performance from 2013 effortlessly achieves the sublime…The engineers have done their work perfectly. Both composer and conductor would surely have been happy with this result of their labours.

January/February 2020

As satisfying as Abbado’s final Bruckner Ninth is, the First is the performance that feels uniquely personal and touching. Anyone who hasn’t acquired these two memorable performances now has the chance at mid-price.

November 2019

A characteristic Abbado interpretation of the 9th, both sustained and deeply moving, but there are significant question-marks over the choice of edition for the 1st.

classicalsource.com October 2019

outstanding performances led by Claudio Abbado, recorded with an excellent tonmeister’s fine ear for perspective, tonal fidelity and good balance.
