About
Five years after their celebrated Dresden Album, Johannes Pramsohler and his colleagues of Ensemble Diderot continue their journey exploring the trio sonata in baroque Europe with a programme dedicated to works from Purcell’s London. Through a combination of well-known works and world premieres they show how English composers used the new Italian form as a vehicle for their creative output and how easily foreign composers picked up the English idiom to create chamber music that could hardly be more profound and expressive.

September 2019
Pramsohler, violinist and founder of Ensemble Diderot, has given careful thought to the construction and originality of his programmes…The London Album is crowned by sonatas by Purcell from his sets of three and four parts. These are illuminated throughout by the Ensemble’s linear transparency and its sheer vitality.
August 2019
There is fascinating music here. On ‘The London Album’, only Robert King’s Sonetta after the Italion way seems to have got in for historical rather than musical reasons. The rest all earn their place with music full of individuality and life…All are tackled with bold relish by Ensemble Diderot.

Clearly a great deal of research and planning has gone into the compilation of both these albums, but Ensemble Diderot’s ebullient approach wears that learning very lightly. Even music that is distinctly subfusc...receives performances that squeeze every last morsel of rhythmic or melodic variety out of their formulaic phrases.
