Julian Bliss joins the Carducci String Quartet in performances of two seminal works – Weber’s Clarinet Quintet in B flat Major, Op. 34 and Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A Major, K.581.
Both Mozart and Weber were inspired by the artisty of performers of their day (Anton Stadler in Mozar’st case, and Heinrich Baermann in Weber’s). Their technical prowess, tonal quality and imaginative range allowed each composer to expand the clarinet repertoire with these works, which remain pre-eminent in the genre.

Bliss sounds well to the fore in the Weber…Riding the Carducci Quartet’s neatly articulated or sensitively sustained accompaniments, Bliss tackles the score with a piercingly pure, vibrato-less tone…But there is no hint of this in the Mozart Quintet…yet the whole reading has a pleasing impulse, balance and bloom.

Bliss offers an unfussy reading in which his personality is reflected through hid moment-to-moment inflections and sensitivity to dynamics rather than through ornamentation and display. The Carducci Quartet offer solid backing, lacking only the last degree of refinement.

Unlike the Mozart, where clarinet and quartet are an integrated unit, the Weber is more a soloistic work with string backing...Bliss and the Carducci do it proud, as they do Mozart’s sublimities.
