About

Legendary leader of the Arditti Quartet; Irvine Arditti has worked on many solo projects and is still today one of the foremost interpreters of the music of our time.

Over the past decade he has given the world premieres of a whole host of large-scale works written especially for him.

His approach to the contemporary violin is fascinating. The works by Salvatore Sciarrino, Elliott Carter, Emmanuel Nunes and Pierre Boulez assembled in this album are among the most widely known in the recent repertory for violin.

Irvine Arditti’s performance of them on this disc is masterly and already sets a benchmark.

Christmas 2017

The title 'Caprices' belies the serious rapport which Arditti nurtured over decades with Carter, Nunes, Boulez and Sciarrino…The works, too, are hardly whimsical but represent a quarter-century of rigorous modernism from 1975 to 2000. Which doesn’t, of course, preclude the actual music from being full of quirks and sleights of hand; all played with white-hot virtuosity and astonishing attention to detail.

1st October 2017

He makes a sustained (68-minute) unaccompanied line enthralling, though there’s plenty of double-stopping and textural coloration for contrast, above all in Sciarrino’s Sei Capricci, habitually using harmonics.
