About

Rachmaninov represents the waning of Romanticism in Russia yet, even by Russian standards, he was extremely fatalistic. His three one-act operas with libretti based on writings by Pushkin and Dante are linked by their theme: fate follows in the footsteps of sin, whether it be a matter of jealous murder, greed or illicit passion.

This triptych is a production of la Monnaie and is conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov and directed by Kirsten Dehlholm.

November 2016

Nechaeva [is] an appealingly sensuous Zemfira and Francesca, sturdy Greek baritones as jealous heavies Aleko and Lorenzaccio, and veteran Sergei Leiferkus excellent as the demented knight. Mikhail Tatarnikov conducts the Monnaie’s players with youthful vigour

November 2016

Rachmaninov’s ashen score to The Miserly Knight broods nicely under Mikhail Tatarnikov’s direction…[he] leads a muscular account of the score, although his groans are distracting. The Monnaie orchestra play with tremendous verve

January 2017

The three stagings, while certainly idiosyncratic, are often extraordinary in their impact, and in these confident interpretations, conducted with passion and commitment by Mikhail Tatarnikov, certainly act as worthwhile reminders of the outstanding quality of these little-known pieces.
