Schneebeli directs an appeal perormance with clear regard for the score's strong theatricality, but not all is perfect...Benoit Arnaud is resonant and impassioned as Tancrede...A slightly more favourable recorded sound would have have helped the soloists, but as a whole this is an impressive and enjoyable issue.

The oboes and bassoons of Les Temps Présents play with sensuous warmth, and there is an adroit balance between the five-part strings in the fine overture. The haute-contre Erwin Aros sings ardently as an Enchanters in the Prologue...Thereafter, Campra's tragedie-lyrique is dominated by low voice...Benoit Arnould's performance of the title-role is by turns suave and valorous.

The present performance is a live recording made in May 2014 at the Opéra Royal at Versailles. It is distinguished by outstanding performances of the principal roles. Clorinde was originally a contralto role, although it in fact lies comfortably for a mezzo such as Isabelle Druet, who manages perfectly the difficult task of conveying both the butch warrior and the sensitive woman in love. Her singing is rich, warm and powerful, and she turns ornaments with graceful ease.
