To Broadway enthusiasts, this 1955 television production of One Touch of Venus has long been a kind of Holy Grail. The 1948 Hollywood film version – shorn of all but a few songs – gave little indication as to why Venus was one of Kurt Weill’s most successful American musicals. In contrast, this 1955 adaptation retains nearly all the songs (including two ballets, originally conceived and choreographed by Agnes DeMille), and is quite faithful to the original book.
