About
An exciting exploration of the sources of Mahlerian inspiration. Can one really grasp the whole of Mahler’s symphonic output without knowing his songs? Not only do they extensively irrigate the first four symphonies, often known as ‘Wunderhorn symphonies’; they also encapsulate the fundamental principles of his reading of the world. Bernarda Fink explores the Mahler cycles from three different angles: the traditional format with piano naturally has its counterpart in the orchestral song, culminating in the 'Kindertoten' and the 'Rückert' lieder.

the Argentinian mezzo brings characteristically classy musicianship and intelligence to the task in hand. The voice is now more sinewy, a little more pushed at the extremes, and it can sound a touch underpowered in the middle register. But the concentration and integrity of the performances is often compelling.

I admire Bernarda Fink’s assurance, her excellent diction and smooth, fluid control. One senses Fink’s complete engagement with the meaning and mood of the texts. In splendid form throughout the Gustav Mahler Ensemble and the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich under Andrés Orozco-Estrada prove unfailingly sympathetic partners.

The clarity of her words, expressive inflection and alluring tone puts her in the league of Baker, Ludwig and Fassbaender on disc. She receives superb support from her pianist, Spiri, and co.
