Franz Schubert suffered failure after failure with his attempts to write for the stage, and this also applied to his incidental music to Hermina von Chézy's Rosamunde. It is impossible to say today why the play was a flop – the original text has been lost in the meantime. However, Schubert's highly romantic overture and the orchestral intermezzi survived as concert pieces, and Robert Heger's complete recording of 1966 showed that the music can stand alone. As one of the leading Lieder singers of her day, Anneliese Rothenberger was predestined to perform the vocal part in the Romanze.
