About
Pehr Henrik Nordgren’s two works influenced by folk music, Concerto for Clarinet Op. 14 & Symphony No. 1, are released here as World Premiere Recordings. The works are performed to a very high standard by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Juha Kangas. Virtuoso clarinet soloist Christoffer Sundqvist has achieved a worldwide reputation. You can also hear folk instrumentalists in the concerto interpreting the composer’s creative “fusion imagination”. The symphony was a pioneering work, composed during the era when Finnish folk music themes were almost banned.
Both works are world premiere recordings.

The performances are superbly prepared and Alba's sound is excellent, exposing every flick on the kantele string and nuance of attack on double-bass strings.

The disc under review comprises two substantial pieces from the first half of the 1970s. In broad sketch each is in a comparable idiom and one that is modestly astringent admitting some dissonance. This is at the sort of extremes we might expect from Bartók and especially late Shostakovich.
