About

Staged by Davide Livermore

The musical notes of this Puccini masterpiece provide the starting point and foundation for a new, highly successful collaboration between Riccardo Chailly and Davide Livermore. In their interpretation, there is "no moment, no movement, that goes against the musical meaning" (R. Chailly). The result is an energetic, authentic, and atmospherically strong Bohème, "in which every sacred phrase receives its own orchestral colour, its own dynamic and its own expression." (Corriere della Sera)

the young cast make an appealing lot. The Israeli soprano Gal James...is a very impressive, straightforwardly affecting Mimi, and she sings with focused lyrico-spinto tone...Chailly conducts a lovely, naturally paced account of the score and the orchestra play very well for him. These virtues can't detract from overall disappointment with the production, though.

In terms of individual interpretations, too, this is an unusually convincing Bohème, with credibly young performers playing the central quartet and singing with textual focus and musical style. Aquiles Machado is an ardent Rodolfo, flanked by the genial and grand-scale Marcello of Massimo Cavalletti, who possesses real star quality.
