It is strange that although Otmar Suitner was a highly capable Strauss conductor in a position to produce brilliant performances of the great late Romantic composer's dramatic and concert oeuvre alike and did so with heart and soul, particularly in Dresden and later in Berlin, there are hardly any gramophone records that prove it.

These mono recordings on tape are taken from the archives of Rundfunk der DDR...Immediately, I was struck by the fresh, urgent playing. Throughout the overall unity of the playing is quite excellent...The sonics are pretty good without being outstanding. At times I was aware of a very slight glassy feel and sometimes a little sourness to the wind instruments.
