About

‘Cloud Atlas’ is a collection of wind music composed by Philip Grange, currently Professor of Composition at Manchester University. Two of the pieces are performed by the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Great Britain conducted by Phillip Scott, with Sarah Williamson as soloist in the Concerto for Solo Clarinet Radical and Symphonic Wind Band titled ‘Sheng Sheng Bu Shi’. The Queenswood Wind Quintet performs the third composition, ‘Bacchus Bagatelles’.

Philip Grange studied composition with Peter Maxwell Davies both privately and at the Dartington Summer School of Music between 1975 and 1981. Grange’s works have been commissioned or featured by, among others, the Aldeburgh, Bath, Brighton, Canterbury, Cheltenham, Huddersfield and St Magnus Festivals, the BBC Proms, the BBC Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras, the London Sinfonietta, The Fires of London, Gemini, Psappha and the Kreutzer, Lindsay and Danel String Quartets.

Overseas, his work has been performed widely, including in Norway, Taiwan, the USA, Holland, Denmark and Germany. A significant number of Grange’s works have been recorded on CD. These include three single composer CDs beginning with ‘Dark Labyrinths’, released on the Black Box label in 2000, ‘Darkness Visible’ issued on the Metier label in 2006, and ‘Zeitgeist’ released on Campion in 2007.
