"Endling" was commissioned for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and describes the ‘last surviving individual of a species or plant’. The Violin Concerto features the 2002 BBC Young Musician of the Year, Jennifer Pike. There is an article on her in the March issue of Classic FM Magazine. The works are a synthesis of Schultz’s approach, bittersweet and lyrical with moments of soaring splendour.

To my ears, this is a composer unafraid to speak in any manner (tonal or otherwise) which serves his expressive purpose, utilising extended time-scales and manipulating instrumental colour and technique to good effect. An accomplished clarinettist, Schultz seems to be especially confident writing for winds, as well as brass and percussion, and this recording will help to ensure his place as one of Australia’s most distinguished creators. The recorded sound is ambient, the performances impressive, the packaging attractive, and the annotations informative. Above all, this is music which comes across as honest, compassionate, dignified and accessible: one of the most convincing of the entire series. Highly recommended.
