About
Live recording from Arena Sferisterio, Macerata, Italy, 2009
The story of a young Nagasaki geisha who, abandoned by her American lover after giving birth to their son, ultimately kills herself is one of the most popular operas today.
This outstandingly authentic and elegant performance took place in the magnificent open-air neo-classical Arena Sferisterio built in the 1820s. The superior cast is headed by Raffaella Angeletti in the title role, “certainly one of the best Butterflies of our time” (ForumOpera.com), who has performed this role in many Italian theatres, as well as in Madrid and at the Vienna Staatsoper. As Pinkerton, Massimo Pisapia is “brilliant, bold and trim” (L'Opinione) and Annunziata Vestri's Suzuki “outstanding” (Rinascita).

a very moving, intelligent show...Pisapia is a good Pinkerton, going from vaguely stupid and callow, to being in love with the idea of love, to sorrow and regret. His voice is hearty and reliable...Claudio Sgura is a wonderful Sharpless.
Opera Britannia 30th October 2011
There are two towering performances – in height, at least, for Claudio Sgura as Sharpless and Annunziata Vestri as Suzuki dominate the stage like few others singers. Sharpless is younger than usual, and this is an excellent, sympathetic portrayal...I loved Vestri’s understated Suzuki, a noble assumption, which doesn’t grab the attention, but has a touching sincerity.
