July 2008

The popular Spanish form of the copla is celebrated by Plácido Domingo. These are almost entirely songs about love, mostly unhappy, in which a man behaves badly to a woman, or vice versa. Domingo sounds idiomatic and perfectly accomplished in this material, and so does the orchestra. Those with an ear for Spanish popular music will not be disappointed by this disc.

June 2008

The great Domingo goes back to his roots for a Spanish 'soul' sessoin.

18th May 2008

Whatever the quality of these Spanish coplas and pasodobles, [Domingo's] singing of them is entirely beguiling, effortlessly idiomatic and committed. “You have to feel [them] passionately and sing with spirit, with feeling and conviction,” he writes in the booklet. “The text and the sense of the words are extremely important.”

13th April 2008

the ageless Domingo returns to his Madrid roots with the up-and-coming Orquesta de la Comunidad under Miguel Roa in these ethnic ditties that capture an endearing corner of this great tenor's musical personality.
