Zimmermann's searing melodrama is based on an 18th-century play, but its emphasis on social decadence and militaristic brutalisation has obvious 20th-century relevance. All the singers cope confidently with Zimmermann's extreme demands, and none more so than Anton de Ridder, who hurls out the highest tenor notes as if there were no tomorrow.
