These fine Vienna players are naturally at home in the Serenade, with the opening sonority supported with a suitably rich, dark bass… The multi-faceted Janácek Mládí (scored for wind sextet, including a bass clarinet) is just as spirited but altogether more plangent, the opening movement piquantly so. All this music is expertly played, with superb matching timbres, and the recording is very real and vivid.
