About

Song, or romans, makes up a large part of the work of almost every Scandinavian composer and here we have a selection from three of the greatest.

Strictly speaking Finland is not a Scandinavian country. However, Swedish was Sibelius' first language and he almost always used the texts of Swedish poets for his many songs, including those on this new Encore CD.

Some of Grieg's best-known music is to be found in his songs. On this disc we have two of the most popular pieces from Peer Gynt plus the beautiful Våren (Spring).

Like Sibelius, Nielsen was a great symphonist. He also composed a body of over 200 songs, most of which, like those here, show a charming simplicity.

Ture Rangström came a generation later than the other composers on this disc. Although his reputation does not extend much outside of Sweden he his best known as a writer of very fine Swedish romans, and the six songs presented here should make a wonderful introduction to his music.
