In the absence of recommendable budget or super-budget recordings of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony, this will do nicely. It's a finely schooled performance, chaste and discreet, with a notable reading of the Adagio which lies at the heart of the work. Tintner sees this very much as a piece, the first (G major) climax finely achieved, the later, greater climax splendidly 'placed'. The coda, Bruckner's lament for the dead Wagner, is played relatively swiftly, touchingly and without bombast. In general, his reading of the score is loyal without being in any sense dull or hidebound. In an ideal world, the playing of the first violins would be more consistently secure in alt. In particular, you have the feeling that both the players and the engineers (the engineering is generally excellent) would have benefited from a chance to refine and tidy parts of the performance of the first movement.
A notable bargain, none the less.
