Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67
Work length29:13
I am going to tell you a story about Peter and the Wolf…
Track length0:27
The Bird by the flute…
Track length0:11
The Duck by the oboe…
Track length0:20
The Cat by the clarinet…
Track length0:16
The Grandfather by the bassoon…
Track length0:16
The Wolf by the horns…
Track length0:16
Peter by the strings of the orchestra…
Track length0:19
The gunshots by the timpani and the bass drum
Track length0:16
Early one morning Peter opened the gate…
Track length1:05
On a branch of a big tree sat a little bird…
Track length1:41
Just then a duck came waddling round…
Track length1:07
Seeing the duck, the little bird flew down upon on the grass…
Track length0:18
'What kind of bird are you if you can't fly?' said he…
Track length0:41
They argued and argued…
Track length0:20
Suddenly, something caught Peter's attention…
Track length0:34
The cat thought: 'The bird is busy arguing; I'll just grab him.'…
Track length0:29
'Look out!' shouted Peter…
Track length0:16
…while the duck quacked angrily at the cat…
Track length0:09
…from the middle of the pond
Track length0:19
The cat walked around the tree…
Track length0:18
Just then grandfather came out…
Track length1:10
But Peter paid no attention to his grandfather's words…
Track length0:33
But grandfather took Peter by the hand…
Track length0:41
No sooner had Peter gone than a big grey wolf came out of the forest…
Track length1:16
In a twinkling the cat climbed up into the tree…
Track length0:28
The duck quacked, and in her excitement jumped out of the pond…
Track length0:15
But no matter how hard the duck tried to run, she couldn't escape the wolf…
Track length0:16
And then he got her, and with one gulp, swallowed her…
Track length1:00
And now, this is how things stood: the cat was sitting on one branch…
Track length0:23
…the bird on another…
Track length0:09
…not too close to the cat
Track length0:26
And the wolf walked round and round the tree, looking at them with hungry eyes.
Track length0:49
In the meantime…
Track length0:21
He ran home, got a strong rope and climbed up the high stone wall…
Track length0:12
One of the branches of the tree around which…
Track length0:21
Grabbing hold of the branch…
Track length0:12
Peter lightly climbed over on to the tree…
Track length0:13
Peter said to the bird…
Track length0:32
The bird almost touched the wolf's head with his wings…
Track length0:40
How that bird teased the wolf!…
Track length0:28
Meanwhile, Peter made a lasso…
Track length0:22
…caught the wolf by the tail and pulled with all his might
Track length0:15
Feeling himself caught, the wolf began to jump wildly…
Track length0:37
But Peter tied the other end of rope to the tree…
Track length0:18
…and the wolf's jumping only made the rope round his tail tighter
Track length0:39
Just then,…
Track length0:09
…the hunters came out of the woods…
Track length0:10
…following the wolf's trail and shooting as they went…
Track length1:16
But Peter, sitting in the tree, said…
Track length0:50
Now just imagine…
Track length0:06
…the triumphant procession…
Track length0:16
…Peter at the head…
Track length0:39
…after him the hunters leading the wolf…
Track length1:00
…and winding up the whole procession grandfather and the cat
Track length1:09
Above them flew Birdie chirping merrily…
Track length0:28
And if one would listen very carefully…
