Nathalie Stutzmann was born in France in 1965 and received her earliest vocal lessons from her mother Christiane (a noted soprano) before studying in Nancy and Paris, where she specialised in lied and was taught by Hans Hotter. A true contralto, with a clean, almost masculine quality to the voice, she is particularly acclaimed in Bach (featuring prominently on Ton Koopman’s complete Bach recordings), Vivaldi and Handel (including the title-roles in Giulio Cesare and Radamisto) as well as in lied and mélodie (where notable recordings include Schubert’s Die schöne Mullerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang, a Brahms recital and a complete Schumann series, all with pianist Inger Södergren).

Stutzmann is also an accomplished conductor, and often directs her ensemble Orfeo 55 (which she founded in 2009) at the same time as singing: their recordings together include Vivaldi: Prima Donna (‘Once heard, never forgotten, Stutzmann’s dark, coppery contralto has an androgynous quality’ – BBC Music Magazine), Handel - Heroes from the Shadows (‘There’s no mistaking either her musicianship or her commitment…Orfeo 55 play superbly for her’ – The Guardian) and Quella fiamma – Arie Antiche (‘She is the star all right, one of the great Baroque singers of our day’ – Gramophone).
