Born in London in 1996, Martin James Bartlett was educated at the Purcell School and was a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition in 2012, going on to win the contest two years later with a performance of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. He subsequently studied at the Royal College of Music, and was a finalist in the 2017 Van Cliburn Competition; in early 2019 Bartlett signed an exclusive contract with Warner Classics, who released his debut album in May of that year. Entitled Love and Death, the programme includes music by Bach, Schumann, Liszt, Wagner, Granados and Prokofiev and met with widespread critical acclaim: The Times observed that ‘everything works to illuminate the music’, The Sunday Times described it as ‘intriguing [and] exquisitely played’, and Gramophone had particular praise for his ‘vicious, visceral’ Prokofiev.
