The Italian pianist Federico Colli was born in Brescia in 1988 and trained in Milan and Salzburg; early successes included first prizes at the 2011 Salzburg Mozart Competition and the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition, where his winning performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto in the final was praised by The Guardian for its ‘thrilling majesty and lyrical beauty’. In 2018 he released his debut album on Chandos, a collection of Scarlatti sonatas entitled The Power of Illusion, which was one of Presto’s Top 10 Recordings of the Year; the recording also won praise from Gramophone for ‘the sheer quality of his playing’, whilst International Piano described him as ‘brilliantly alive to Scarlatti’s infinite variety’. His discography also includes Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (alongside Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata and Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No. 10) on Champs Hill, and Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and Busoni’s Funeral March after Wagner (both recorded live at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr).
