Born in Frankfurt in 1962, Petra Lang trained in Darmstadt and at the opera studio of the Bavarian State Opera, beginning her career as a mezzo-soprano. During the early 1990s she sang mainly comprimario roles such as Flora and Annina in La traviata and Fenena in Nabucco, but from 1994 she began to move into the more dramatic territory which would establish as a major artist on the international stage and in the studio: Wagner’s Fricka, Waltraute and Brangäne (she would later add Ortrud, Kundry and even Isolde and Brünnhilde to her repertoire), Marie in Berg’s Wozzeck, and Cassandre in Berlioz’s Les troyens. She sang the latter role on Colin Davis’s Grammy-award-winning recording of the work with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2000, and her discography also includes Ortrud on Semyon Bychkov’s Lohengrin (BBC Music Magazine’s Recording of the Year in 2010), the Brünnhilde of Die Walküre on Jaap van Zweden’s ‘Hong Kong Ring Cycle’ on Naxos, and Brünnhilde’s Immolation Scene with Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra on Channel Classics.
