BBC Music Magazine Choices, BBC Music Magazine - March 2024 Choices

BBC Music Magazine March 2024; cover-star Jakub Józef OrlińskiViola-player Timothy Ridout's celebration of his great forebear Lionel Tertis on Harmonia Mundi takes the palm in this month's issue, with reviewer Paul Riley observing that 'If violists owe Lionel Tertis an inescapable debt of gratitude, with this release Timothy Ridout repays those dues handsomely'.

Ridout is joined by pianists Frank Dupree and James Baillieu for a programme which pays tribute to Tertis as commissioner, composer and arranger, including sonatas by York Bowen and Rebecca Clarke and shorter pieces by Fritz Kreisler, Eric Coates, William Henry Reed and William Wolstenholme.

Recording of the Month

Timothy Ridout (viola), Frank Dupree (piano), James Baillieu (piano)

'From imposing sonatas to salon bonbons, these recordings constitute a deft salute not just to Tertis the man and multifaceted musician, but also to an enduring legacy which lives on in distinguished successors – not least among them Timothy Ridout himself.'

Available Formats: 2 CDs, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC, Hi-Res+ FLAC

Orchestral Choice

Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Edward Gardner

'What [Grieg] does with folk material is so enchanting that, in this beautiful incarnation with the Bergen players delivering so freshly and responding so well to Gardner’s rhythmic drive in the livelier sequences, you’ll be compelled throughout.'

Available Formats: SACD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Concerto Choice

Théotime Langlois de Swarte (violin/director), Le Consort

'There is no doubt about the exceptional playing of both soloist and orchestra, directed by Langlois de Swarte himself – alternately exuberant , wayward, introspective and melancholic, they move seamlessly.'

Available Formats: 2 CDs, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Opera Choice

Reinoud Van Mechelen (Atys), Marie Lys (Sangaride/Flore), Ambroisine Bré (Cybèle), Philippe Estèphe (Célénus)

'The instrumentalists of Les Talens Lyriques brilliantly tease out the drama...but the ultimate glory is Rousset ’s playing of the harpsichord, to which he gives its own affective voice – rejoicing , chiding, urging, weeping – to match the action.'

Available Formats: 3 CDs, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Choral & Song Choice

Ruby Hughes (soprano), Manchester Collective

'Imaginative, sensitive programming has been a constant feature of Ruby Hughes’s collaborations; and this latest with the perennially adventurous Manchester Collective is no exception...A disc to concentrate the mind and enfold the soul.'

Available Formats: SACD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC, Hi-Res+ FLAC

Chamber Choice

Trio con Brio Copenhagen

'The Schubert requires different interpretative skills [from the Weinberg], such as grace and elegance as well as a subtlety and variety of tonal colouring in balancing the three instruments – qualities which are evident throughout every bar in this outstanding performance.'

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Instrumental Choice

Ada Witczyk (violin)

'Lasting between three-and-a-half and six minutes, these highly idiomatic works are a testament to the intimate, tactile nature of the connection between instrument and player, and the appeal of a gutstringed sonority unencumbered by continuous vibrato.'

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Jazz Choice

QOW Trio

'These are musicians working together with the kind of intuition that only comes from an intensive focus on the material and a profound collective self-awareness, allowing each track to come alive on its own terms via a superbly detailed recorded sound that leaves an aching sense of an imagined live audience.'
