Gramophone Choices, Gramophone Editor's Choices - September 2023

Gramophone cover for September 2023, featuring Yuja Wang'An absolute belter' of a Tchaikovsky Five from Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (released on Reference Recordings at the beginning of August) takes pride of place in next month's issue, with reviewer Mark Pullinger singling out the 'lovely and rounded' horn solo in the second movement and the 'Viennese grace' of the third for special praise. The symphony is coupled with Honeck's own orchestration (with Tomáš Ille) of Erwin Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet, which Pullinger describes as 'quirky and occasionally grotesque'.

Editor's Choices include an 'altogether terrific' set of Schmittbaur symphonies courtesy of German early music ensemble L’Arte del Mondo, Yuja Wang's 'legendary' debut recital at the Verbier Festival from 2008, and a 'very strongly recommended' album of Mozart violin sonatas from Renaud Capuçon and Kit Armstrong.
