About
A Cantata for Suffering Children
This work was composed in memory of a member of the Highgate Choral Society who had suffered under the Swiss Verdingkinder system, a historical practice of indentured child labour. The cantata explores themes of childhood trauma, resilience, and hope, culminating in a message of triumph over adversity.
The libretto, by Diana Jones, weaves together poetry by Rudyard Kipling, Louis MacNeice, Emily Dickinson, Robert Graves, Edward Thomas, and Jones herself. The texts are chosen for their emotional depth and universality, creating a haunting literary and musical experience.
Scored for Soloists, SATB choir, and orchestra, this work premiered in 2024 at Cadogan Hall in London.
Orchestral material is only available to hire. Vocal scores can also be hired.
