About
The Barr River flows in a remote and now uninhabited corner of my home peninsula of Morvern, in the West Highlands of Scotland. The surrounding area was once home to a fairly large population and the Barr River sustained the community's lives and crofting agriculture. In the 1820s, during the Highland Clearances, all of these local people were tragically evicted by the landowner to make way for large-scale sheep farming. In November 2021, on the site of this terrible historical injustice, the Barr Hydro Scheme was officially opened. At 1.5 MW, it is currently the largest community-owned hydro scheme in the UK and the Barr River can now, once again, bring hope, prosperity and power to its small local community. The piece's material is derived from fragments of two Gaelic songs from Morvern, one despairing at the tragedy of the Clearances and the other happily praising the land.
