“Te’amim” (cantillations) are among the phenomena emerging from the head of the primordial man, Adam Kadmon, at the start of the second of the three stages of the Creation, according to the 1 6th century cabbalist Isaac Luria. They suggested the decorative melodic lines, which dominate the second and most substantial section of my piece. The opening (for violin alone) acts a brief prelude. The third section is a transition to the final part, which begins as a joyous dance, with a cascade of notes from the violin and a chain of trills in the piano, before gradually winding down to a quieter finish. Te'amim was written in March 1 994 and dedicated to my parents on their 50th wedding anniversary. The second and third sections make use of material from a short piece for soprano and theorbo written in 1985 and now withdrawn. The first performance of Te'amim was given on 1 1 th October 201 2 in the Rosslyn Hill Chapel, Hampstead by Darragh Morgan (violin) and Jonathan Powell (piano).
