This setting of Dylan Thomas’ meditation on the death of a child in wartime was commissioned by Mark O’Keeffe princial trumpet of the BBC Scottish Symhony Orchestra), who recorded it with the soprano Annique Burms on the Delphian label. The setting follows the poem’s 3 section structure played without a break) and tries to match its crescendo of intensity. The glissandi which pervade both played and sung parts recall both the sirens of the raid and the stricken cry of the poem’s resonse, allowing the trumpet to ‘seak’ as emotionally, if unconsolably, as the soprano: the two performers united in grief.
