Inspired by ancient artwork found on the walls of the Dunhuang Cave temples of China’s Silk Road, Chen Yi’s FLYING DANCERS is a short, acrobatic work for clarinet, viola, and cello. Translating the painted dancers’ motions into sound, bold rhythmic gestures are balanced with delicate filigree and counterpoint. Violists (and their listeners) will savor the audacious cadenza at the dramatic center of this brief, but lively, sonic ballet. For advanced performers.
