"Episodes" begis with a violin cadenza which, when joined by the piano, merges into a lyrical section wherein the piano plays an accompanimental role with quietly-moving 8th notes, while the violin deals with melodic material. The piano becomes increasingly involved, moving into the following scherzo-like section where a rich interplay takes place. The violin has another brief cadenza which melts into the 8th-note patterns previously played by the piano, while the piano now takes on the melodic-expressive responsibilities. The rather fast second movement is propelled by a rapidly repeated note. To balance the violin's cadenza at the beginning of the first movement, the piano opens this movement alone; the violin soon jumps in and establishesa healthy equality leading to a brief violin cadenza, which closes on a double-stop trill that accompanies the piano's restated fragmentsof the 8th-note patterns from the first movement. The rapid, schoerzo-like music returns, slower than before but gradually increasing in speed until the opening tempo is reestablished for the closing section, which ends on a cadence also lifted from the first movement.
