Hieroglyph was written in 2020 for Dan Weinstein, to whom it is dedicated. The music begins with a sonification of the first nine letters of the Hebrew alphabet, expressed as numbers. As the piece continues, the sound of the instrument and its different modes of playing become the real subject of the music. The analogy I had in mind as I wrote this music was with the learning of language and, more specifically, with the unlocking of the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphs in the first half of the 19th century. An alphabet only becomes useful when we form words and we need familiarity and context if we are to understand what the words mean. I also like the wider implications of the hieroglyph analogy: that puzzles can be solved and that the solutions will be extrapolated from things that we already know.
