From the water was commissioned by Merton College, Oxford and celebrates St. John the Baptist, to whom the college chapel is dedicated. Two texts are combined: passages from Chapter 3 of the Gospel according to St Matthew (translated by John Wycliffe), who completed his degree at Merton in 1356.

From the water was first performed by the choir of Merton College, directed by Peter Phillips, in the college chapel on 9th May 2014.
