?Cribratio? is a mediaeval Latin word meaning sifting or sieving. In this piece, rhythmic and pitch material are generated by means of a series of sieves (which bear no relationship to Xenakis? pitch sieves) applied to five repetitions of a 30-bar formant and a 12-component pitch series respectively.

A further process of sieving was used to create the rhythmic material for the piece?s sixth and final section, which is slower and more subdued than the preceding five, and makes extensive use of harmonics and multiphonics.

Cribratio was written between October 2020 and February 2021 and is dedicated to Mauricio Galeano, who gave the work?s first performance at Kraftwerk, Chemnitz on 19th October 2021.
