Crosse?s ?Arietta? for oboe and piano is a ?thank you? to oboist Sarah Francis, a dedicatee of Crosse?s most important work for oboe ?Ariadne?, commissioned by Michael Johnson for his wife, Sarah Francis and the ensemble Contrapuncti.
The other dedicatee is the composer, pianist and organist Peter Dickinson, who had performed many of Crosse?s songs written for him and his sister Meriel Dickinson to perform. The material of ?Arietta? derives from Scene II Part 3 of Crosse?s ballet ?Young Apollo? (1984), commissioned by David Bintley for the Royal Ballet. The piece resurfaced in 2023 thanks to composer Rob Keeley, Sarah Francis and Michael Johnson.
