About
The following pieces are designed to introduce students to the ?neck? positions. Each piece may be played in just one of these positions, without shifts or extensions. All available notes in each position are included in the cello parts. The fingering and notes for each position on all four strings are given at the start of each piece. The pieces are designed for students of about Associated Board Grade III ? V standard. At this stage, it is essential for cellists to start to develop a thorough knowledge of the ?topology? of the neck but there exists very little teaching material that presents this in a systematic form, excepting series of pure exercises, such as those of Feuillard and the like. While the pieces are written primarily as studies, they may also be used as recital material, in which case, alternative fingerings can be employed, if desired. Six Position Pieces were originally composed in 1991. Some minor revisions have been made before publication.
