About
The term "sin-eater" refers to a person, usually a beggar who, through ritual means, would take on by means of food and drink the sins of a deceased person, thus absolving his or her soul and allowing that person to rest in peace. The ritual is said to have been practised in many parts of Britain until the late 19th century. The sin-eater was abhorred and shunned as a thing unclean and cut himself off from all social intercourse with his fellow creatures, living as a rule in a remote place by himself. In this piece the isolation and loneliness of the sin-eater is what I have largely tried to depict whilst some ritualistic elements are also suggested.
