Written in the late summer of 1999, this piece is a tribute to the composer?s mother who had died earlier in the same year. The opening section is peaceful and reflective as well as suggesting the mood of the piobaireachd, and at the start of the central section the violin rises to sing the main theme above low piano octaves, a polarised texture that tries to emphasis the mood of stillness as well as a sense of spaciousness so redolent of the scenery of the southwest corner of Scotland where she had lived. The music then suddenly becomes angry and unsettled before the serenity of the opening returns to bring the work to a peaceful conclusion.
