Inwards was conceived as a musical Gestalt deriving form, and always referring to, the very act of breathing. Therefore this music should be played "inwardly", i.e. with a strongly "centred" attitude as in Za-Zen or Yoga meditation, always emphasising breathing as a dialectic and indeed musical force. Inwards was commissioned by the Landesmuseum Stuttgart for flautist Antje Langkafel.
